Halapp: A food directory for web and mobile case study
Halal food directory, available both on the web and as an iOS mobile app.
The Halapp team approached us with the idea of creating an iOS mobile application aimed at Muslims in the UK, to allow them to find nearby Halal establishments. Importance was placed on ensuring that only certified Halapp establishments were to be listed on the platform, due to non-halal meat being commonly mis-sold as halal.
The app was to feature searching for halal establishments by name, postcode, city/town or even the user's current location. Information for selected establishments was to include details on the facilities offered, opening times, food served, contact details, and so on.
Our approach was an API first one, with the goal to have both the website and mobile application sharing the same core functionality. This approach allowed us to cut development time, granting Halapp a quicker time to market.
We recommended that Halapp should have a mobile-friendly web platform, instead of being limited to the iOS market. Having a web platform allowed Halapp to access the entire mobile and web markets. Through search engine optimisation, the web platform allowed users to more easily discover Halapp through search engines - more quickly increasing Halapp's user-base.
The Halapp website was developed as a mobile-friendly web application and launched in February of 2015, along with the iOS app on the App Store.
